FAA Requirements for Instrument Rating

To obtain an Instrument Rating, you must meet the following FAA requirements:

  • Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate.
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Hold at least a second-class medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner.
  • Complete a minimum of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time, which includes:
    • 15 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor.
    • 25 hours of instrument flight time.
  • Pass a written knowledge test.
  • Pass a practical test (checkride) with an FAA examiner.
