FAA Requirements for Instrument Rating
To obtain an Instrument Rating, you must meet the following FAA requirements:
- Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate.
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Hold at least a second-class medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner.
- Complete a minimum of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time, which includes:
- 15 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor.
- 25 hours of instrument flight time.
- Pass a written knowledge test.
- Pass a practical test (checkride) with an FAA examiner.
