FAA Requirements for Private Pilot License

To obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL), you must meet the following FAA requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Hold at least a third-class medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner.
  • Complete the required flight training and obtain a minimum of 40 flight hours, which must include:
    • 20 hours of flight training with an instructor.
    • 10 hours of solo flight time.
  • Pass a written knowledge test.
  • Pass a practical test (checkride) with an FAA examiner.
